Raising Our Voices for Justice and Mercy

Faith communities in Maine and across the country are raising their voices in opposition to the accelerated arrests and detention of immigrants, the majority of whom are working people embedded in community life with families to support. They are not criminals. The federal funding freeze is yet another example of implementing a sweeping mandate without regard for the reckless endangerment of people in dire need of assistance.

The concern of Pax Christi Maine does not stem from a political agenda. It stems from a Christian faith commitment rooted in the Gospel of Jesus who calls all Christians to offer welcome to the stranger, to give preferential treatment to the most vulnerable among us. Politics aside, these concerns are humanitarian ones. These ill-conceived actions have far reaching consequences. I ask those wielding power at federal level…Do you truly value human life? Do you believe all people are worthy of respect and dignity? Can you see the irreparable harm being done?

Our society has veered far off course from building a safe, secure nation with common purpose, unity and equity for all. I urge all people, including people of conscience, people from all faith traditions and spiritual paths to speak out. Our unified voices and actions are very much needed in these times.
