As we gather, Pax Christi Maine acknowledges the traditional indigenous inhabitants of this land we call Maine. We pause to recognize and honor the current nations who comprise the Wabanaki Confederacy – the Penobscot, the Passamaquoddy, the Maliseet, and the Mi’kmaq peoples – who have lived in harmony with this land for generations, enduring colonization and genocide. We extend honor and respect to their elders both past and present. We mourn the loss of life stories of indigenous people who did not survive colonization. We respect the traditional values of these indigenous people. We affirm their inherent sovereignty in this territory. We support their effort for land and water restoration and for their cultural healing and recovery.
