Bread Not Bombs: Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Davenport Park, Bangor – August 6, 2025

Pax Christi Maine and the Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine co-sponsored a community gathering to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States. People from diverse backgrounds, from social justice and peace organizations, various faith traditions and different spiritual communities came together to lament, to pray, to reflect and to call for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

This gathering also included an urgent call for people to work together to build a different world, to create a culture that fully supports people’s basic needs such as healthcare, housing, food security, education, justice, equity and more. We recognize a critical need to build a new culture where peacebuilding, love, compassion and nonviolence are practiced and prioritized.

The program included a number of speakers including faith leaders, veterans, justice activists, a physician, and a retired professor. Prayers, reflections and songs were led by members of the community and by Pax Christi members.
