Maine Peace Education Initiative hosts powerful speakers and a portrait unveiling!
The positive energy was vibrant at the Common Ground Fair on Saturday September 21, 2024. Over 26,000 people in attendance on the second day of the three day fair, according to MOFGA.
Last Spring, Martha Morrison of World BEYOND War demonstrated her deep passion for Peace Education by inviting a number of Maine organizations dedicated to peace, justice, nonviolence and environmental sustainability to form a coalition with a purpose. Her vision calls for groups to work together to develop a variety of forums for teaching people how to put an end to war and build peace! Pax Christi Maine is pleased to be among the coalition members and organizers.
Our event on 9/21 was held in the Political and Social Action speaker tent and showcased the following:
- Rob Shetterly, artist and originator of the Americans Who Tell the Truth project, spoke about his portrait paintings (now #270) of Americans who stand up for truth, justice and democracy. Rob unveiled his new portrait of Doug Rawlings, Veterans for Peace founder, who shared his experience of being drafted, serving in Viet Nam and working for a sustainable peace.
- Rivera Sun, Pace e Bene/Campaign Nonviolence, peace educator and author spoke about the myriad of ways people working together can build a culture of peace and nonviolence. Rivera shared how the arts, creativity and literature can empower deep and lasting change.
- Josh Kaupplia, Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine told of a creative listening project which highlights the experience of 25 unhoused community members in Bangor. He emphasized the impact of excessive military spending on addressing people’s basic needs for housing, healthcare and employment.
- Martha Morrison, World BEYOND War, closed with a message of encouragement to all to persist in working for peace and ending war. Martha distributed a number of excellent WBW resources.
