“Living our Call to Gospel Nonviolence” – Assembly Part 2 – 8/17/24

Twenty Pax Christi Maine members, from all parts of our state, gathered for an in-person retreat on August 17, 2024 at St. Monica’s Hall in Augusta. Our day included prayer, reflections, scripture readings, silence, hymns and Taize chant with harmonium accompaniment. We enjoyed a hearty lunch and this special time for socializing in person.

As requested by members in advance of our assembly, this retreat offered an opportunity to share with one another our grave concerns about the horrific Israeli/Hamas War; the genocide in Gaza; increasing violence worldwide as well as fears about the upcoming elections its consequences. Members were invited to share additional concerns weighing on them as well.

In both small and large groups, we shared honest conversation related to world events, to personal and communal struggles. How do we manage our thoughts and feelings in these times of oppression, upheaval and distress? How do we continue to live our call as disciples of the nonviolent Jesus in a world where violence is so prevalent? How do we discern our calling to serve others in the midst of great suffering?

Members expressed appreciation for the support of our Pax Christi faith community. We took time in the afternoon to express love and gratitude for people who inspire us, to give thanks for Pax Christi members who came before us, ancestors from whom we draw strength for the nonviolent journey.

Ideas for prayer, study and action were generated before our closing prayers and hymns. Thank you so much to all the retreat planners, readers, prayer leaders, music makers! We are blessed to have one another.
